Another weather advisory hits mid-Missouri
COLUMBIA - A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect Thursday across parts of mid-Missouri, causing slippery conditions on roadways.
This is at least the third weather-related advisory to hit mid-Missouri in the past month, making Wednesday's warm temperatures a thing of the past.
"One day it's cold, the next minute it's hot," Columbia motorist Cedric said. "The next minute it's warm and next it's raining. Then it might be a tornado outside, then it might be Hurricane Irma here. You never know, that's why I'm planning on moving out."
A Boone County Public Works spokesman said crews had to be out longer than they had hoped because of sleet that hit the area.
Crews were swapped out at about 6:00 p.m. and will continue to work throughout the night. The spokesperson said the biggest concern is re-freezing later in the night as temperatures continue to fall.
"The highway is fine," Columbia motorist Imane said. "I mostly use the highway. It's these inner city roads that are a little slick. So I would just advise everyone to be careful, take your time and don't speed."
The Missouri Department of Transportation also said in a release that crews will continue to treat and plow state-maintained bridges and overpasses as needed.
Columbia Public Works sent crews out at 12:30 p.m. Thursday to begin treating bridges, curves, inclines and intersections. An eight-person crew to treat designated snow routes as of 6:40 p.m., reapplying treatments washed away by rain.
